Tips On Using Credit
Don’t co-sign.
Think twice before you co-sign a loan for someone else. If the
other person defaults on the loan, you are responsible for payment. Failure to
pay can hurt or ruin your credit rating. Also, co-signing a loan will count
against your debt ratio and could cause you to be refused for an auto or home
loan.
Watch your limits on
bank cards.
Keep limits low on any credit card, but especially bank cards. If
you apply for a loan at any bank, the credit limit on your cards can be counted
as debt, and could hurt your chances for loan approval.
Don’t fall for minimum
purchase rules.
Some stores require a minimum purchase amount to use a credit
card. In most cases, minimum purchase amounts are NOT required by the card
companies. Don’t fall victim to this obvious attempt to make you spend more. A
few cards, however, DO require a minimum purchase amount. Avoid them. It’s an
additional temptation to spend more.
Contact your lender if
your status changes.
Divorce is a common area of confusion about credit. Remember that
YOU are at least partially responsible for any debt that has your name on it.
Any joint accounts that you signed are still yours, despite other legal
agreements. If your marital status changes, or any other situation in which you
have joint credit, contact your lender immediately.
Know what you’re paying
for.
Before you sign a credit card application, make sure you know
what your “cost of credit” is. Opt for the card with the lowest annual fee and
the lowest interest rate.
